Screener Watch: Carol
I never got Weinstein’s Macbeth, but I’m glad to finally have this one even if I’m very critical of the push to put Mara in the corner (ergo Supporting Actress). Carol Stars: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy Director: Todd Haynes Premise: From IMDb: “Set in 1950s New York, a department-store…

Predictions: Last-Minute Globes
In little over an hour, we’ll know the full extent to which the Golden Globe Awards have either matched the Screen Actors Guild or repudiated them. Since only 2,000 members of SAG are selected for the nominating committee from a significantly larger body, samples can often be unrepresentative of the body as a whole, thus…

Precursor: 22nd Screen Actors Guild Nominations (2015)
In a very uncharacteristic move, the Screen Actors Guild has gone so far away from the current Oscar narrative that either they will redefine the competition or they’ll be thought entirely irrelevant. Harvey Weinstein’s influence is clear with both the Woman in Gold nomination and the category fraud of Rooney Mara. Trumbo did surprisingly well,…
